What is a Writer’s Web Site Worth?

by Scot Herrick on August 8, 2007

Pretty Little MistakesHere is something very clearly provided by an author during an interview on The Publishing Spot. Jason Boog is interviewing author Heather McElhatton on her new book Pretty Little Mistakes and asks the Ten Keyboards question on technology helping to promote the writer’s work:

Jason Boog:

You have a web page, MySpace page, and some interesting web promotions for your book. How did you establish these links to your readers, and how to you keep them interacting with you? What are the websites/web resources you like to read, and why?

Heather McElhatton:

I like maintaining my own web page and MySpace page because I get a better feeling for the people reading my book.

I don’t think you can publish a book without a website these days. It’s essential. (emphasis mine, Scot)

Every year, we need to learn new things for our work. If you haven’t thought about how technology can help market your work, I’d start learning how that is done now. It will help your career.

Dear Scot,

Thanks for the mention! It’s funny. I love learning more about web tools, but sometimes I feel like too much of my writing energy is devoted to figuring out these new technologies. All we need to do is invent a 36-hour day to do all the writing work.

Keep up the good work on your site…

I haven’t figured out the balance between learning tools and writing — especially since this site is about technology for writers. But, technology and the maintenance of it is a serious rabbit hole if one isn’t too careful.

Keep up the good work, Jason. You’ve got a great blog.
