The Problem? The Solution

by Scot Herrick on August 21, 2007

One of the more interesting concepts in blogging happened over at Writing Thoughts and Grow Your Writing Business. The challenge? Write one post on a problem and another on your solution.

Now, this is one of those blog “meme’s” where bloggers think up an innovative way to get people to write about their subject. My issue? The meme is usually about something totally unrelated to the topic on your blog — and you know how I am about that topic. You need to write about the topic of your blog and stay there because it helps define your brand.

Well, this meme was perfect for it. I wrote an article that was on topic for my blog — The Problem: My Hosting Company Sucks — and a solution to it through — The Solution: Changing Hosting Companies. Both were struggles with technology for a writer. And, believe me, they have been struggles.

Yvonne and Laura have posted all the articles for the problems and the solutions and they are a great, eclectic set of issues presented by writers. I’m passing them on here as a great representation of the different avenues you could pursue for a writing blog and how to stay on topic.

And, oh-by-the-way, great reading too.

Hi Scot
Thanks for your great entry and for this roundup. I also appreciate your feedback on the Shared Answers concept.

We tried to make it open ended for exactly the reasons you outline. We’re also open to any further suggestions for improvement.

Yes, I agree that this eclectic mix of posts makes for some great reading. I’ll be sure to let you know when we host our next group writing project. Thanks again for your involvement and support.

You’re welcome. Thanks to both you and Laura for coordinating the project; it was a lot of fun for me to write especially because I had just gone through all the angst of figuring out if it was time for me to change hosting companies; something every writer will need to face in the future.

I agree this was a great group writing project, and I also have the same philosophy that I participate only if I can relate the topic to my blog. Right now, I’m running a group writing project on “It’s Funny NOW, But Then …” It’s open-ended so anyone can write something related to their topic. But it will be a chance for a few good laughs as we learn from the experiences that seemed awful at the time but are funny NOW.
