One of the real drains of our productivity is that thing over there that is all cluttered. We know we should clean it. We know we should organize it. Yes, it is exceptionally low-tech. But, we don’t write or write as well knowing that something needs to be done to clean up and organize.
My cluttered place is my grandmother’s desk, which I have with me in my office. The top of it is totally filled with stuff. I close the door by it so I don’t have to look at it. I look at it and just see so much time that needs to be spent cleaning it up.
I won’t even tell you all of the things that need to be done just with the top of the desk. But they all represent choices — choices that I am avoiding. I need to take one small thing that takes 30-minutes to clean up on the desk and just do it. That will start the process and keep the motivation going.
Are you not doing something because it looks too big? Break it down into something smaller and do one thing that you can complete in 30-minutes. You’ll feel better about having accomplished something…and maybe even break that writer’s block!
