Technology Plan: Development

BookwithblankpagesA technology plan is what a writer uses to decide which areas of technology will be used to market their work. Much like a writing or marketing plan, the technology plan is differentiated by deciding which technology vehicles should be used for the marketing.

Should you use just a web page and blog? Would MySpace make sense? Participating in writing forums?

There are two parts of the decision.

The first part is deciding who the audience is for your work. Some things don’t change, right? If you can’t define the audience for your work, you’ll have a difficult time determining which technology portals to use — as well as which agents and publishers to submit your work.

Once you decide the audience, you can start the second part of the decision: evaluating if a particular technology portal matches the demographics of your targeted audience.

Do you write young romance novels? MySpace would be a great place to build an identity around your writing. Participating in the forums of Eon.com? Not so much because Eon.com is oriented to people over the age 50.

But, if you write about health issues as one grows older, participating in the forums and knowing the issues on Eon.com makes perfect sense.

Your plan should have a target audience and then how your target audience is served by the technology portals you have selected.

Powerful stuff to present to a publisher: an audience, the technology portals that fit the target audience that drive that audience to your blog and web page where you show up marketing your book.
