Safety as an Oxymoron

FreshHotCoffeeSignOver the last two months, I’ve been getting ready to and have actually moved into a new house. As a celebration — which really means we’re so tired of doing move stuff we needed a break — we decided to spend the weekend at a Bed and Breakfast in Port Townsend, WA.

It was a wonderful weekend, including a great Bed and Breakfast in the James House, where the pace was slow, the food was great, and the world was far away.

Walking along on the dock out into Puget Sound, my curiosity got the best of me on a sign that was attached to a ladder that went from the dock down into the sea (or the other way around, depending upon your perspective).

Here’s what the sign said:

Warning: Safety Ladder. Use at your own risk.

Its the first time I’ve ever seen safety promoted as something that is risky.

It is, perhaps with variations, a great fictional plot — something that is safe is instead entirely risky.
